Settlers who flocked to what is now known as Wayne
County back in 1798 chose the name of Revolutionary War
hero, General “Mad” Anthony Wayne, born in nearby Paoli,
Pennsylvania. During the ensuing years, Wayne County
became a hotspot for pivotal moments in our country’s
history. Horace Greeley and a group of colleagues met in
Honesdale in 1859 to support Abraham Lincoln’s
presidential candidacy. Here Christian Dorflinger
glassware took the country by storm. And the county is
the birthplace of the American railroad, as the
Stourbridge Lion arrived from England in 1829 to begin
its journey throughout the region. Our railroads, canals
and coal production eventually became vital commodities
to cities like New York and Philadelphia. |

Today, Wayne County is sixty percent woodland, fed by
rivers and streams like the Delaware, Lackawaxen, and
Wallenpaupack Creek. Elevations range from the 2,656 ft.
summit of Mt. Ararat to 670 ft. at the Delaware River.
Honesdale, with a population of roughly 5,200 is the
county seat, with an overall Wayne County population of
nearly 50,000 residents in 51 communities. The county
contains 3 state parks, 13 community parks and more than
20,725 acres of state game lands. Both Lake
Wallenpaupack, with 52 miles of shoreline, and the
Delaware River reside within the county lines, along
with several dozen glacial lakes and more lakes than any
other county in Pennsylvania. Agriculture is the primary
industry of Wayne County, but we clearly take tourism
very seriously. Think of Wayne County for your next
vacation experience! |
